You Are Not a Fraud: What Imposter Syndrome Is Really Costing Creatives
- Candice Madrid
- Create by Faith, For Creatives, Brands
You have been building. Maybe quietly. Maybe for years. And somewhere between the late nights and the low follower count you started wondering if any of it actually counts.
It does. All of it.
Today I want to talk to you about imposter syndrome. Not from a distance. Not with a list of quick fixes. From the trenches, because that is exactly where I have been.
Let me start with a story.
The Friend Who Almost Talked Herself Out of Her Own Work
Not long ago I was talking to a creative I love dearly. She had illustrated a coloring book. The whole thing, by hand, from scratch. Beautiful work. Real work.
And instead of celebrating what she had built, she was stuck. Feeling like she was not ready. Feeling like a fraud.
I stopped her right there.
Because here is what the word imposter actually means. Fake. Not real.
And this woman had an entire coloring book full of evidence that she was absolutely, undeniably real.
So do you.
You Are Not Alone in This
Let me share some stats that are going to shock you and comfort you at the same time.
84% of entrepreneurs and small business owners report experiencing imposter syndrome at some point in their careers.
A 2024 Korn Ferry study of 10,000 professionals found that 71% of US CEOs experience symptoms of imposter syndrome in their role. Senior executives came in at 65%. These are the people running the companies. The ones with the titles that took decades to earn.
And then there is this one. 86% of successful entrepreneurs who had already generated at least $10,000 in sales said they still dealt with imposter syndrome.
You are not uniquely broken. You are not behind. You are human. And you are in very good company.
What Happened When Experience Was Not Enough
In 2024 I stepped into the open market for myself. At that point I had over 16 years of experience as a designer. I had worked for big brands. National brands. I had been part of creative teams building magazines, building marketing content, helping marketing teams understand analytics. Real work. Years of it.
But I did not have a big following.
And something strange happened. People questioned what I knew in a way they never would have in a corporate setting.
In the corporate world your title tells the story. Production assistant. Senior graphic designer. Art director. Creative director. Each title carried years of seniority behind it. People knew exactly what level you were operating at before the meeting even started.
The open market does not work that way.
It was not really imposter syndrome for me in that season. It was more like navigating other people's belief systems not yet matching mine. And that gap is real. It can make you feel invisible even when your work is anything but.
So I built an archive portfolio. Not to post publicly, because you have to be careful with corporate work. That work belongs to the companies you worked for. Do not market yourself using it. But I wanted proof. For myself and for the people I needed to trust me. Sixteen years of it was sitting right there.
Your experience is not gone just because nobody online has seen it yet.
The Follower Lie Nobody Is Calling Out
Here is where I want to be very direct with you.
We have been sold a lie. And I say we because I believed it too.
The lie says this. If you do not have over 100K followers you do not have a real business. If your reel does not go viral your experience does not count.
That is not true. It has never been true.
Research shows that follower size functions as a symbolic resource. Not an expertise resource. A large following tells you about reach. It tells you nothing about skill or transformation.
I have low account numbers right now. I have also built a successful business through God, run a media company, and make more than I made in my corporate position. Not from a massive audience. From real skill and real relationships.
A thousand true followers outperform 10,000 ghost followers every single time. And right now the platform is resetting. If you are starting now or rebuilding now, this is actually a clean slate moment. Real people are coming in. The ghost followers are being cleared out.
Your years of real skill, real results, and real relationships are not canceled by a vanity metric.
Proverbs 14:23 says this. All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.
If you are putting in the work quietly and consistently without the audience you think you need, that work is bringing profit. Maybe not in the way you can see yet. But it is working.
The Part Most Creatives Skip
Here is something I said to a creative I know who is building right now. And I am saying it to myself too.
Your content might look incredible. Clean, crispy, professional. But where is the heart?
Share the late nights nobody saw. Share what it was like before the team, before the camera setup, before any of it looked polished. Share the failures. The money you spent that did not work out. The course that promised everything and delivered nothing.
Those are the stories that build trust. Those are the moments that let someone say, me too.
In my first YouTube videos I always showed up as the professional. The expert with the answer. And now I just want to sit with you. Visit with you. Share what I am going through, what I am seeing, what I am learning in real time.
That shift did not come from a strategy. It came from Proverbs 3:5 through 6.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways submit to Him and He will make your path straight.
When I read that this morning and sat down to record this episode I asked one question. Lord, what does my creative friend need to hear today?
This is what came out.
You Are Being Established
I want to break imposter syndrome off of you right now.
Designer. Illustrator. Photographer. Writer. Creator. Look at your work. Look at your past. Look at the tests you passed, the promotions you earned, the art you made, the projects you finished. You are not a fraud. You are a real creative. I see you.
Here is your homework from this episode.
Write down three things you have done in your career or your creative work that you are proud of. Not the posts with the most likes. The things you know in your gut were excellent. The things where you looked at what you made and thought, wow, I did that.
Then sit with this question: if nobody could see my following, would I still believe I was good at this?
That question will tell you everything.
Stay Humble. Keep Building.
Proverbs 11:2. When pride comes, then comes disgrace. But with the humble is wisdom.
Stay humble. Keep building. Even without the numbers watching.
Those are the ones wisdom shows up for.
You are not invisible. You are not a fraud. You are being established.
Now go build something great.
If you know a creative who needs to hear this today, share it with them. Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is say, you are not alone in this.
