You Have Been Overlooking Your Biggest Gift

Last week I was listening to a podcast by Ed Mylett and he said something that stopped me cold.

He said sometimes you have a gift and you do not even know it is a gift. It is just something you do naturally. Something that comes easy. And because it comes easy, you overlook it.

I sat with that for the rest of the week.

Because I realized I had been doing exactly that.

Chasing the Title Instead of the Gift

I spent years chasing a career path I saw on TV and learned about in college. The track went something like this: intern, graphic designer, senior graphic designer, art director, creative director. That was the ladder. That was the dream.

And I climbed it.

But getting there was not easy. I did not come from a family that could pay for college. I did not understand loans or financing. I figured it out, pushed through, got married at 21, and graduated at 28. Six years after most people walk across that stage.

I do not say that to perform struggle. I say it because it matters that I fought for something I deeply believed in.

The Lord allowed me to hit every mark. Art director. Creative director. I got there. And then just as quickly, those seasons closed. Looking back, it almost feels like He was saying, okay, you wanted it. You got it. Now let us move.

But I was still chasing the skill. The credential. The title.

And I was missing the actual gift.

What Came to Me Naturally

When I sat down to write out everything I was good at, I started where most creatives do. Graphic design. Photography. Ads. Print publications. Editorial design.

But then I kept writing.

File systems. Pre-press. Master pages. Team workflows. Scheduling. Automations. Planning and building the backend. Checking in on people and making sure they had everything they needed to do their best work.

And I stopped.

Because I realized I did not just do those things. I loved doing them. I lit up doing them. I had been doing them for years across every client, every project, every team I touched and I had just never called it a gift.

Systems and operations. Building the structure that lets creative work actually flow.

That was it. That was the zone of genius I had overlooked because I was too focused on the visible skills.

And the fruit was already there. In my business. In my clients. It had been showing up the whole time.

I just had not named it.

What This Has to Do with You

If you have been feeling like something is off. Like you are working hard and showing up with real skill but something still feels like it is missing. This might be your moment.

Not every gift looks like the obvious thing.

Not every zone of genius is the thing you studied for or built your portfolio around. Sometimes it is the thing underneath. The thing that makes your work actually work. The thing people always come back to you for but you have never thought to mention.

Here is what I want you to do.

Write it out.

Not just your skills. Not just what you were trained to do. Write down the daily tasks you actually enjoy. The things that do not drain you. The things you would do even if nobody was watching.

That list will show you something.

For me it was a simple inventory. Just writing down what I had done and what gave me energy. And there it was. The whole time.

You are not missing anything. You are probably overlooking something.

Ministry Is Not What You Think

I want to shift directions here because there is something connected to all of this that I have been sitting with.

I was reading in Luke. The passage where Gabriel appears to Zechariah and Zechariah questions how Elizabeth could possibly have a child at her age. And Gabriel comes back with something close to, do you know who you are talking to. I minister to God.

That word stopped me.

How do you minister to God. Because when I heard the word minister I automatically thought church services. Preaching. Leadership roles. Programs.

So I went and looked up the actual meaning.

In the biblical sense, to minister means to serve. To attend. To wait upon. To assist. To carry out sacred duty. To stand before. To be stationed near and ready for service.

That is what Gabriel was saying.

I stand before the Lord. I am stationed near Him. When He sends me, I go. I am ready to serve.

Ministry is service.

And that is where it clicked for me. Business is also service. When someone asks what you offer, what are your services, they are asking how you serve. Ministry and business are not separate categories. They are the same assignment wearing different clothes.

For a long time I kept those two things in separate boxes. Faith over here. Business over there. As if bringing them together was somehow overstepping.

But ministry in the marketplace is not a concept. It is what we are already doing when we serve people well, build with excellence, and show up with the truth of who we are and who we belong to.

The Bible Is My Blueprint

I will say this plainly. The Bible is my blueprint.

You will see that phrase used all over online. Blueprint for this. Blueprint for that. But the Word of God is the only one that has not changed. The only one that has consistently shown me how to lead my family, run my business, and stay anchored when things around me do not make sense.

My first ministry is to serve my children and my family. That is the assignment I carry before anything else. Before the brand, before the offers, before the strategy.

That conversation with my daughter is a good example. A teacher had shared something with her that was taken out of context. When she came to me I did not just tell her what to believe. I sat down with her and we went back to scripture. We looked at what was actually happening in that time and culture. What the Greek or Hebrew actually meant. What the whole chapter said, not just one piece of it.

By the end she said I really need to get into the Word more.

That is the work. That is ministry at home before it is ever ministry in the marketplace.

Do not receive doctrine from one source and accept it without going back yourself. Read the whole chapter. Study the context. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand. He was left for us as a teacher. Use that gift.

Where This Lands for You

You have a gift. Maybe more than one. And there is a real chance you have been overlooking the most powerful one because it comes easy or because it does not look like what you were told success was supposed to look like.

Stop chasing the title someone else defined.

Write out what you are good at. Write out what you enjoy. And look for the thing underneath the obvious thing. That is usually where the real work is waiting.

And if you are building a business right now, a brand, a platform, anything that serves people, I want you to know that is ministry. You are not serving in spite of your faith. You are serving because of it.
